Best Focus Apps for Japan’s Common Test and Juken Study
You open a textbook and somehow end up watching short videos. Entrance-exam study needs more than another burst of motivation. Give memorisation, past papers and answer review their own distraction-free phone setup.
Match the setup to the learning task
| Task | Keep available | Focus pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Vocabulary and terminology | Flashcards and a necessary dictionary | 25-minute focus / five-minute break |
| Common Test past papers | Paper, clock and required audio | Normal session matching the actual subject timing |
| Reviewing answers | Explanations and an error notebook | A separate short review block |
| Juku or tutoring | Lesson platform and essential communication | Restrict social apps and games |
Keep Pomodoro out of a full timed mock
Juken is the familiar Japanese term for taking entrance examinations. The Common Test is one specific examination; it does not describe every university’s admissions route. Use the National Center for University Entrance Examinations’ current subject and candidate information for Common Test practice.
A 25-minute promise helps you begin memorisation. A realistic timed paper needs its proper continuous working time. For listening practice, check the playback method before restricting the phone. Finding out that the audio app is unavailable after locking is a setup failure, not discipline.
Prepare the next round before the break
FocusComet returns selected apps during each five-minute Pomodoro break, but that is not a requirement to open a video feed. Put the next question on the desk, stand up and return to a ready task. Keep family contact, travel, authentication and necessary materials in the plan.
International students in Japan
If you are an international applicant or an exchange or degree student, do not assume the Common Test is your required route. Check your university’s own admissions or course-assessment instructions. Use the same app profiles around the exam, essay, language study or project you actually need to complete.
Pick the app for the juken problem you actually have
| Need | Compare | Why |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube and games take over self-study time | FocusComet | The apps vanish for the session and return after |
| Detailed app and website rules | AppBlock or Stay Focused | Granular schedules and strict settings |
| A study plan across many subjects | Focus To-Do or Engross | Tasks and timer side by side |
| A visual reward for long study days | Forest or FocusComet | Trees or a growing universe |
Your juken calendar, phone included
The Common Test usually takes place over a weekend in mid-January, and second-stage university exams follow from late February. Months of mock exams lead up to both. That fixed calendar makes it easy to plan your phone.
Spring to autumn: schedule a daily session after school or cram school so self-study starts on time. Mock exams: sit each paper in one continuous session at real timing while Vanish Mode clears LINE games, TikTok and YouTube off your screens. December and January: switch to Allow-only for revision days and use Hard lock on the evenings before the test weekend.

Frequently asked questions
Which focus app suits entrance-exam study in Japan?
FocusComet if the phone keeps pulling you away: Vanish Mode takes the tempting apps off your screens for the session. Compare AppBlock or Stay Focused for website rules, and Focus To-Do for task-led planning.
Should I break every 25 minutes during Common Test practice?
Not during a full timed paper: sit it at the real length in one session. Use 25/5 rounds for vocabulary, formulas and reviewing mistakes.
